Peter J. Dean, PhD

Peter J. Dean Ph.D.Paul King has worked full time in the health care industry for 28 years and served as a CEO for 19 years. He has served as CEO of St. Mary Hospital in Philadelphia, CEO of St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware. As a Blue Cross CEO, he had considerable international health experience as his Blue plan held the exclusive Blue license in 100 foreign jurisdictions. He also served as CEO of the Delaware Community Foundation.

Dr. King has served on more than two dozen Boards of Directors including local, regional, national and international Boards. We will just mention two of them here. He served as Chair of the Board of a captive insurance company domiciled in Denver that provided general liability and malpractice insurance to doctors and hospitals in 6 states. In this role, he had significant experience in risk management and in managing malpractice cases in litigation. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association of America, which provides insurance for 85 million Americans. More than one in three Americans is insured by Blue Cross.

He holds two masters degree and a doctorate in educational leadership. His doctoral dissertation focused on comprehensive prenatal education for high-risk pregnancies of poor, uninsured teenage immigrants, many of whom did not speak English. Dr. King has twice been awarded Excellence in Teaching Awards for his college and graduate school teaching. In March 2004, Delaware Governor Minner awarded Dr. King the prestigious Dr. Wallace Johnson Community Service Award for his visionary leadership and service to the people of Delaware.

Dr. King is retired from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and spends his time on what he considers to be “fun” projects which includes mentoring the next generation of leaders. In his career, he has had six individuals who worked directly for him who became CEOs on his watch. One of the individuals he mentored is now the CEO of Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.  He enjoys teaching at the Wharton Graduate School of Business in Philadelphia. He also does consulting primarily on medical issues both domestically and internationally. He also continues to volunteer on a number of non-profit Boards of Directors.
